Munan Finds Freedom in the Groove of “Disco In My Room”

Munan makes bedroom freedom danceable, clever, warm, intimate and irresistibly catchy.

Song after song, Munan is becoming one of the artists I keep coming back to. “Disco In My Room” makes that very easy to understand. It sounds effortless on the surface, but there are little production decisions everywhere that keep pulling my attention back in. The bass has a lovely stinginess to it, the chord progression knows exactly where it needs to go, and the melody sits comfortably alongside those vocals. Everything feels simple and easy to take in, yet there is plenty happening underneath.

If you like Connan Mockassin, Soft Hair, Mac DeMarco or Men I Trust, I can imagine this slipping rather naturally into your listening habits. But that is where the comparison stops for me. Munan takes those familiar ingredients and cooks them in his own kitchen. The swirly guitar, room reverb and groove give the track a wonderfully enclosed feeling, almost as if the music itself is bouncing around the four walls. I particularly like how tightly everything is glued together: nothing needs to shout for attention, because the arrangement has enough small tricks to keep the whole thing compelling.

The writing is just as considered. Munan does not mess around with unnecessary words; he tells the story clearly, and the central idea is right there in the title. “Disco In My Room” becomes the four-word sentence holding the whole piece together: the private space, the dancing, the freedom from judgement and that little sigh of relief when nobody is watching. I love that the lyrics and instrumentation are telling the same story without fighting each other. The result is a great piece of recorded music, and for me, another reminder that simplicity can require a surprisingly clever hand.

About Munan:

Munan is the project of Korean-Australian artist Peter Lee, whose music brings alternative rock and indie-pop together with a strong affection for groove and texture. Following his 2025 EP “Everything in Between”, “Disco In My Room” became an important early step towards his next album. I can hear why: this feels like an artist getting closer to the things he most enjoys making and trusting them enough to leave some space around them. At Where the Music Meets, that combination of craft, personality and repeat-listen appeal is exactly what keeps me interested.
