I pressed play expecting curiosity to carry me through the song; instead, I found myself completely absorbed by its strange sense of purpose.
Every element feels locked into the same pulse. The guitars don’t chase memorable hooks, the rhythm is there but refuses to rush, and the constant repetition slowly changes its meaning the longer you stay with it. Rather than sounding mechanical, the music behaves like something alive, expanding and retreating with the confidence of a ritual that doesn’t need explaining.
The vocal performance became the thread that held everything together for me. There’s an Appalachian character in the delivery that gives the song an earthy weight, making even its most surreal moments feel believable. Around that voice, subtle psychedelic colours drift in and out without stealing attention from the composition itself. Nothing feels decorative. Every decision seems to serve the same emotional destination, and that’s surprisingly rare.
I also appreciated how comfortable the band is with restraint. Plenty of artists would have turned an idea like this into a theatrical spectacle, piling on effects until the atmosphere collapsed under its own weight. jesus is the path to heaven choose the opposite route. They trust silence, repetition and space to do the heavy lifting, and the reward is a piece that leaves behind an unexpected feeling of calm. Lately I’ve struggled to connect with where a lot of modern music seems to be heading, so discovering songs like this reminds me that there are still artists willing to follow their own compass instead of the market’s.
