I’ve been trying to write about “BANDITĀ” , but the track seems perfectly capable of making its own case. Some songs spend their entire runtime asking for your attention. This one walks in, drops a groove on the table, and suddenly everyone is looking in the same direction. My role here is mostly to point at it and say, “Yes, that. Go listen.”
The thing I kept returning to wasn’t a particular guitar line or production trick. It was the feeling that the song was built for people rather than playlists. There’s something communal buried inside it. Not in a festival-headliner way, not in a hands-in-the-air anthem sort of way. More like a call travelling through a town square, pulling people from different corners until they’re all sharing the same rhythm. The track moves with purpose, but never with hurry. Somehow relaxed and urgent at the same time.
Jonathan Shaheri’s blend of Persian influences and surf-rock textures could have easily become an exercise in style. Instead, it feels natural, as though these sounds have always belonged together and simply needed somebody stubborn enough to put them in the same room. The Middle Eastern colours don’t arrive as decoration; they’re part of the song’s DNA. Every turn in the arrangement feels connected to that conversation between heritage and reinvention. If Khruangbin fans find themselves drawn to this, it won’t be difficult to understand why.
The older I get, the more I appreciate instrumental music that trusts itself. No dramatic spoken-word section. No last-minute vocal appearance. No attempt to explain itself. “BANDITĀ” just keeps dancing. The rhythm section stays locked in while remaining wonderfully loose, shifting beneath the guitars like desert sand beneath your feet. And somewhere in all of that, the track becomes ridiculously fun. I genuinely think this might be one of the most enjoyable instrumentals I’ve come across this year. Put it on during tea time. Put it on at the beach with a joint. Put it on while doing absolutely nothing. It’ll find a way to improve the situation.
