Dylan Rockwell Let the Song Run on “Down”

Let it run. Dylan Rockwell closes his new EP with "Down" — abstract, driven, and full of attitude.

Rockwell‘s “Down” opens with authority. The drums hit first, firm and confident, followed by a guitar lick that feels instantly familiar without tipping its hand. There’s attitude here, but not the kind that postures. It’s more about forward motion — a song built to move, to stretch its legs and see how far it can go.

The tone is pretty effective. Not obvious, not over-defined, leaving space for interpretation. That ambiguity feels intentional, even generous. The song doesn’t try to pin you to a single emotion or message; it lets you project whatever you’re carrying into it. Given that Dylan himself no longer knows what the original intention was, that openness feels honest rather than vague.

The rock influence is strong and worn proudly. There’s a definite Red Hot Chili Peppers flavour in the way the groove locks in and the guitars breathe — elastic, rhythmic, and slightly loose in the best way. The track never feels stiff; it feels like it’s in motion the entire time, propelled by instinct rather than structure.
And then there are the guitar solos. Thoughtful, expressive, and full of quality, they don’t interrupt the song’s flow — they extend it. They feel earned, not decorative, adding to the abstract atmosphere rather than trying to resolve it. As a closer, “Down” doesn’t tie things up neatly. It leaves the door open, still moving.

About Dylan Rockwell:

Based in Washington, DC, Dylan Rockwell records and produces his work from a small basement home studio, keeping things close and personal. “Down” appears on his second EP, “The Window’s Closing (But It Still Lets In The Light)“, and serves as its final statement. Originally written years ago during his time in the band Moozy, the track brings together all of those musicians once more — a full-circle moment released under the Dylan Rockwell name. The result feels lived-in, road-tested, and unconcerned with polishing away its edges.
