Mind Awake, Coffee Optional: A.M. Owl’s Funked-Up Wake-Up Call

Need an extra-strong coffee? Skip it. A.M. Owl’s "Mind Fuck" will do the job — funky, floaty, and fully awake before breakfast.

Monday mornings in Portugal ask for mercy. I usually answer with espresso. This week, though, I took A.M. Owl’s “Mind Fuck” before breakfast — and honestly, the caffeine felt optional. This track doesn’t ease you in. It snaps your posture straight and says, “Alright, let’s be awake now.”

There’s an immediate Jamiroquai-coded strut here — that bass and drum pairing doesn’t stroll, it moves furniture. It’s funky in a way that feels lived-in rather than polished to death, and that’s important. The groove isn’t showing off; it’s doing a job. It pulls you forward, even when the song is talking about alienation and political tension. Heavy themes, light feet.

What really caught me was the vocal timbre. It sits comfortably inside the mix, never screaming for attention, but still landing every line with intent. There’s a floaty quality hovering above all that funk — almost like your thoughts lifting just enough to breathe. The keys help with that, bathing the track in Prince-leaning tones that soften the edges without sanding them down.

Then come the guitars, sneaking in with that Grateful Dead looseness and a hint of bluegrass earthiness. It shouldn’t work this well, yet here we are. The production keeps everything clear and warm, letting the rhythm do its thing while your mind stays pleasantly fucked. In the best possible way.

About A.M. Owl:

Based out of Chicago, A.M. Owl are a five-piece operating under the idea of music as medicine — and “Mind Fuck” makes a solid case for it. They live between funk, soul, and rock, leaning into improvisation and refusing to repeat themselves live. That sense of freedom is baked into this track. You can hear a band that trusts each other, trusts the groove, and trusts the listener to keep up.
For a project that pulls from Jamiroquai, Tower of Power, Prince, and the Dead without sounding like a checklist, that’s no small feat.
