Some mornings need caffeine, others need a chill soundtrack that slowly expands the space around you. McDead’s new single “LoFly” falls firmly in the second category — a drifting, exploratory piece that hovers somewhere between ambient calm and sci-fi dreamscape.
There’s something liberating about how “LoFly” refuses to stick to a fixed shape. It stretches out like water in motion — always forming, never finished — and that’s exactly where its charm lies. The twin Ebow guitars drone like signals from a distant galaxy, while the glitch-tinged keys flicker like stars caught in peripheral vision. Subtle bass rumbles keep everything grounded, but only just. It feels less like a song you press play on, and more like a space you step into.
I’ve been looping it on my morning playlist, and there’s a quiet kind of magic in the way it resets the day. Not in a loud, upbeat motivational way, but in the gentle realignment of a compass. The track’s chill tempo acts like an anchor, while the constant shifts in texture nudge your thoughts somewhere brighter. It’s contemplative music without becoming heavy, and exploratory without losing its sense of calm.
Really love how McDead manages to make the experimental feel so inviting. There’s a lot going on in the layers — drones, glitches, tonal shifts — but nothing shouts over the rest. Instead, it feels like the sound equivalent of a sunrise: patient, unhurried, quietly transformative.
About McDead:
Behind McDead is Kev Edinborough, a London-born producer and archaeologist (yes, really). His path is as eclectic as his sound: roadie and guitarist through the wild alternative scene of 90s England, supporting bands like Inspiral Carpets and Echobelly, before swapping the tour bus for academia and a PhD. Now based in Melbourne, Kev’s music pulls equally from Captain Beefheart, Jimi Hendrix, Steve Reich and the IDM underground, which explains why his tracks are hard to pigeonhole but endlessly fascinating. His debut album, recorded with Plastic Jungle Records, sold out its vinyl run in 2021 — and with singles like “LoFly“, he’s proving that the unfinished business he mentions is well worth following.
