[TIFU] CHAPTER XXXIII

From all indie genres, Folk seems to have a special place in our hearts. We can't help to get back to folk songs when we look for some calm and inspiration. When we want to hope for a nice dream. Or when we are feeling in the mood for some very well told stories. As an honour to those feelings, this series is entitled TIFU (Today I Folked Up). Only folk songs from new folk artists. To let you and ourselves go.

Bess Atwell – The Weeping

Bess Atwell, the Brighton-based singer-songwriter, is making waves following two standout performances as the main support for Ed Sheeran at the iconic Royal Albert Hall. Unveiling her latest track, “The Weeping”, produced by Aaron Dessner of The National. Known for her captivating voice and nuanced songwriting, Atwell’s upcoming headline shows, including a performance at London’s Union Chapel, will be followed by support slots with The National.

The genesis of “The Weeping” lies in a powerful childhood memory for Bess, growing up alongside her sister, who has severe autism. Singing atop deliberately unfussy instrumentation, Atwell explores the profound connection with her sister, describing them as “two halves of a whole“. The track takes on new resonance as Atwell reveals that shortly after recording both this and the previous song at Dessner’s studio in upstate New York, she received her diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder. This revelation brought a wave of personal and artistic validation, adding depth to her already introspective songwriting. The track beautifully delves into the complexities of growing up with a sibling with autism, weaving a narrative that echoes her own experiences and newfound self-understanding.
