Meadowlark‘s latest release “Brainwashed” tackles the notion that we have been programmed to believe that material possessions, success, and companionship are essential components for our well-being and satisfaction. This mindset, however, is fallacious. The track takes this. And how the universe repeatedly demonstrates this falsehood by granting us these fleeting entities, only to take them away again.
Meadowlark is not new to this concept of writing about how life questions impact us all. The duo (which has been featured in our blog about 6 times before), is now pursuing an even more honest songwriting focusing on their own lessons about love and life. With a sonority that goes from acts like Daughter to bits of folk-rock like Fleet Foxes and depth like Sufjan Stevens, is also sounding more at ease with themselves, reflecting on a more low-paced way of writing tracks. This no-rush flows naturally into the lyrical depth that is so common in their songs.
“Brainwashed” wants to expose the truth in their eyes: we are all to some degree indoctrinated, but the key to happiness lies in realizing that everything we require is already within our grasp. The present moment is the only reality we have, and anything else is temporary. This realization may seem daunting, but it could also be the most freeing revelation of all.
About Meadowlark:
The voice belongs to Kate McGill but she’s only half of the story. While she also brings her keyboard playing and songwriting to the mix, she is equally matched by partner Dan Broadly who is a multi-instrumentalist. Together they are Meadowlark, a duo we’ve written too many times about here at WtMM since 2017 but which have been a while since they’ve released a new track.
