Abby Dormer – Fig Tree

Fig Tree is a comforting, organic blend of folk and pop music.

Abby Dormer is a singer/songwriter based in New York City, who welcomes listeners with her warm and gentle melodies. She pays homage to the great female folk artists of the ’60s and ’70s and sings about the stories that unfold around us as time moves forward, and the unique quality of light that propels us onward. Growing up on the Jersey shore, Abby was exposed to a broad spectrum of music ranging from the Grateful Dead to Judy Garland. She pursued her passion for music by learning to play the piano at just four years old, and continued her musical education throughout her childhood. She taught herself how to play the acoustic guitar, mandolin, and Irish bouzouki, inspired by her love for Celtic traditional music.

With an old soul, Abby crafts songs that evoke the past while remaining firmly rooted in the present. Her music is a testament to her talent, as she creates a musical landscape that invites listeners to take a journey with her.

Inspired by Sylvia Plath’s “Fig Tree” passage from The Bell Jar, Abby was moved to create a piece that explored the yearning to live multiple lives and embody various identities, and the subsequent struggle of being overwhelmed by too many options. “Fig Tree” is a comforting, organic blend of folk and pop music that conveys a subtle sense of sadness. The track features the Irish bouzouki and lively percussion, accompanied by an unsteady, unsettled violin. The song tells a story of feeling immobilized by analysis paralysis and the gradual passing of time, all communicated with a subdued but urgent tone.
