The Paper Kites – Walk Above The City feat. MARO

Walk Above The City shows no rush getting to a certain point in itself, but rather concentrates in prolonging and making the whole journey very enjoyable.

I have to begin this article stating clearly that I am a big fan of both MARO and The Paper Kites. 6 days ago, on February 4th 2021, the Australian indie-folk-rock five-piece and the Portuguese singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist collaborated resulting in a sensible, soulful track called Walk Above The City.

Walk Above The City is a profound single (and touching video), depicting moments of life on hold, suspended in the air, Flowers underneath us now, Towers underneath us now, as a consequence of not really being attached to anything/not having anything holding you back:

No time to even speak / Nothing to say / No rain or storms above / That could make us stay.

Bright lights and tired streets
We could get away
No time to even speak
Nothing to say
No rain or storms above
That could make us stay
Let’s walk above the city
You and I

Flowers underneath us now
Towers underneath us now
We walk above the city
You and I

And we’re breathing more
Than we ever have before
And it goes

Cars are underneath us now
The stars are underneath us now
We walk above the city
You and I

Flowers underneath us now
The towers underneath us now
We walk above the city
You and I

And we’re breathing more
Than we ever have before
And it goes

The soundscapes they are able to create intertwining MARO’s ambiguous deep/soft, powerful/whispered vocals and the low-maintenance albeit starstrucking guitar are very captivating. Actually, the entire track is very captivating in part because there is no climax. Walk Above The City shows no rush getting to a certain point in itself, but rather concentrates in prolonging and making the whole journey very enjoyable – in that soft, low-lit dawn, suspended in space and time, floating above flowers, and towers, and cars, and stars.

Walk Above The City is The Paper Kite’s final push before March 12th, when their fifth studio album, Roses, is set to be released.
