Daggy Man is the project of Thomas Calder, born about a year ago. His debut album, A Lazy Kind of Pain, began to paint the picture of this man. Thomas Calder is the substance to Daggy Man’s art and that’s how we believe art should be made.
According to Daggy Man’s Facebook page, “These songs are somewhat of a scrapbook, constructed from memories that may or may not be entirely accurate.” There’s the inspiration based on true events and then there’s the creative part where everything can get molded and transformed, never losing its identity.
Lovers On A Hospital Wing is the 4th track of A Lazy King of Pain and it just got a new video. This is a tune that reminded us of a mash up between Only The Poets and Death Cab For Cutie. It is sung in lullaby form, with a warm and soft voice that speaks right to our hearts. It seems to have had little to no production involved, keeping the track as raw and untouched as possible. This clean result makes it very easy to imagine Thomas singing right next to us as if he was pouring his heart out and we were to comfort him.
[su_quote cite=”Thomas Calder”][Lovers on a Hospital Wing] was written from a very emotional place, and the narrative is essentially exploring the lyrics as a letter to myself, saying and offering much needed comfort in a time of despair in my life.[/su_quote]
Lovers On A Hospital Wing already was so relatable, very easy to connect with and the video facilitates it even more. The video is in vintage style, suiting perfectly Thomas’s raspy vocals and acoustic guitar-based track. There is a sense of novelty, discovery and happiness; of evolution, sadness and familiarity; of comfort, discomfort and acceptance. Like lovers on a hospital wing.
We can’t help but share the transcript of the lyrics since we can’t quite get over them. Just too beautiful:
Find myself in the forest
With a child who likes to shriek
Giving some watch a polish
From a time I’m trying to keep
Oh, it’s a boy
You can tell by the blood in his cheeks
Born for employ
Live and die on the pleasure it seeks
But oh my God give him ego
Keep afloat through the harsh of the sea
All my life through a window
Like the lovers on a hospital wing
Like the lovers on a hospital wing
Found myself in the hard bits
Through the pain and past the hurt
Clinging on tight to darkness
All the anger made it worse
Oh it’s a phase
You can tell by the smoke in his eyes
Sleep through the days
Seeking pleasure til’ the moment it dies
But oh my God give him ego
Keep afloat through the harsh of the sea
All my life through a window
Like the lovers on a hospital wing
Like the lovers on a hospital wing
(Don’t forget your loved ones, You’re loved son)
But oh my God give him ego
Keep afloat through the harsh of the sea
All my life through a window
Like the lovers on a hospital wing
Like the lovers on a hospital wing
